    June 22-23, 2002
    Cleveland, OH
    3rd (2-way tie) of 15 Teams

Congratulations to everyone who came out and played at No Surf this weekend (Andy Norman, Brody, Craig Wilkins, Viktor Miladinov, Ben Greene, Randy Augustine, Kevin Peterson, Gabe Brisson, Phil Katz, Erik Kaufman, Brandon Welch, Matt King, Ed Schneider, and Aaron Paulos). The competition was great and we rose to the occasion. A special thanks to Erik who was a great host and to Brandon Welch, Matt King, Ed Schneider, and Aaron Paulos for coming on such short notice and playing so well.

We tied Madcow for 3rd place at this tournament. We didn't play the consolation 3rd/4th game. On the first day, we only had one loss to Burn, who advanced to the finals. On the second day, we only had one loss to Steelehead (preseason name for Big Ass Truck from Michigan) in the semi-finals. They went on to beat BURN in the finals. The highlight of the tournament might have been universal game point 11-11 against Cuyahoga Sheet Metal. The winning pass was thrown and slipped through one of our player's hands, only to be scooped by Craig Wilkins for the win.

    Saturday Pool Play (3-1):

  • RUN 13 - Ohio University (Athen, OH) 3 recap
  • RUN 13 - Years of Hysteria (Chicago, IL) 8 recap
  • Burn (Cleveland & Cincinnati, OH) 13 - RUN 3 recap
  • RUN 13 - Fatty Magee & the Cuban Refugees (MI) 4 recap
    Sunday B-Bracket Elimination (1-1):
  • Quarterfinals: RUN 12 - Cuyahoga Sheet Metal 11 recap
  • Semifinals: Steelehead (Michigan) 13 - RUN 8 recap

Day One Game 1: Ohio University (13-3 Win)
We came out strong and just rolled from beginning to end.

Day One Game 2: Years of Hysteria (13-8 Win)
This team came out and took an early lead, but we won half 7-6 and then pushed on through for the win.

Day One Game 3: Burn (13-3 Loss)
Not really sure what happend this game. I think we were pretty tired from the last game, and perhaps we were awed by this team. They were the 2001 champs and ranked first at the tournament. We got our act together at the end, but too little too late.

Day One Game 4: Fatty Magee & the Cuban Refugees (13-4 Win)
This team had just come off an upset of years of hysteria and we had just come off a big loss. The game was 1-1, 2-2, and then we opened it up to 7-2 for the half. After that, they seemed to be just playing for fun (and to get out of the heat) which was a good thing because we were down to nine players.

Day One Quarterfinals: Cuyahoga Sheet Metal (12-11 Win)
The top 4 teams got a first round bye on Sunday. We were top four by point differential. The 5-12 teams played each other to see who would play the top 4 teams. The loser's went to the B-bracket. Cuyahoga Sheet Metal beat Damn Gravity (Kent State) to play us in the quarter-finals.

I think we traded points with cuyahoga at the beginning. Then we started to pull away, but then they came back. we took half 7-6 or 7-5. Out of the half we began to trade points again. It was 9-8. We scored, 10-8. Tthe cap went on. We scored to go 11-8. Then they scored 3 in a row to give us a good scare. It was 11-11 game to 12. We were on O for universe point. We worked it down the field and someone through it for the score. It eeked by Kevin Peterson who macked (accidentally) into Craig Wilkin's eager hands. Game over.

Day One Semifinals: Steelehead (13-8 Win)
Steelehead is the preseason name of Big Ass Truck out of Michigan. We played this team at Centrals (first half 7-5, final 13-6) so we were eager for a rematch. We traded points to 5-4 by playing good clean basic ultimate. Nothing fancy, just patience, dump, swing and flow. At 5-4, steelehead kicked it into high gear and took half 7-4. The second half we continue to play well, but we could not make up the ground. Final....13-8. This is the second time we played this team and it went much better than last time because we played the entire game and not just one half. Steelehead went on to beat Burn in the finals 15-13.

  • RUB 2002
    July 27-28, 2002
    Rochester, NY
    7th Place of 20 Teams

This weekend RUN was represnted by 15 guys: Ben Greene, Brody, Dan Kulp, Dan Leszkiewicz, Darren Shultz, Dave LaRose, David Vatz, Jason Short, Jeff Herald, Jeremy Gottlieb, Jim Strathmeyer, Kevin Peterson, Randy Augustine, Tom Pribicko, and Viktor Miladinov. Player Stats.

We only lost one game on the first day to Goat (Toronto) who went on to win the tournament. The second day we lost a heartbreaker by two points in the quarterfinals to Phoenix. They went on to beat Scrap in the semis and lost to GOAT in the finals. We went on to play Joystik and lost, but we won our last consolation game by forfeit which put us in 7th place.

    Saturday Pool Play (3-1):
  • RUN 13 - yEUTH.ANd.Age.SIA (Boston, MA) 2 recap
  • GOAT (Toronto, ON) 13 - RUN 3 recap
  • RUN 15 - UPHEAVAL (Maplewood, NJ) 14 recap
  • RUN 13 - Dr. Awkward (Rochester, NY) 10 recap
    Sunday Elimination (1-2):
  • Quarterfinals: Phoenix (Ottawa, ON) 13 - RUN 11 recap
  • 5th-6th/7th-8th: Joystik (Toronto, ON) 15 - RUN 4 recap
  • 7th/8th: RUN 0 - Mr. Fixx (Saratoga, NY) -1 forfeit

    Day One Game 1: yEUTH.ANd.Age.SIA (11-2 Win)
We came out fired up for our first game of the day. We took half 7-0 and marched straight on through to a 13-2 victory. This team only had 7-8 people and they picked up a few people the day of the tournament.

Day One Game 2: GOAT (13-3 Loss)
We were coming off a big win and got started with this game right away. Unfortunately, our excitement didn't do much for us. GOAT took half 7-0 and the final was 13-3. This was a great team that played a really smooth offense. Our offense just never got started. We always seem to lose big to 'big' teams the first day.

Day One Game 3: UPHEAVAL (15-14 Win)
This team was seeed number 5 in the pool, but they turned out to be our toughest game of the day. This team was a young team with some great athletes. I recognized some players from Rutgers University. I think others recognized players from a high school in NJ. We came out of our bye and were playing pretty strong, but so were they. We would pull ahead and they would battle back. We took half 7-6. They came out strong out of the half. They scored 5. We scored 1. Score 8-11 them. We played crazy D and chilly O to tie it up at 11s. We continued to trade points, but neither team could close out. Finally, the hard cap went on and we won 15-14.

Day One Game 4: Dr. Awkward (13-10 Win)
The weather started to shift from sunny and wonderful to cold, windy, and wet this game. We weren't handling nearly as well as we did in the earlier game, luckily neither was the other team. We just couldn't get it together the first half and we took half 7-6. The second half the weather cleard and so did or game, we slowly pulled ahead and closed the game out 13-10.

Day Two Quarterfinals: Phoenix (13-11 Loss)
Phoenix is a team from Ottawa doing the exact same thing that RUN is doing here in pittsburgh. They are looking for a shot at nationals in 2-3 years. This was another great game. They came out really strong and we didn't. It was tied 2-2, but then they pulled ahead to 3-6. We took a break to let some lightning clear. When we came back out, we really picked up the pace and traded points with them to a 5-8 half. Out of the half we kept trading points to 8-11. Then we scored a big upwinder to close the gap at 10-11. The cap went on. The game was to 13 hard. We traded points 11-12. Then we pulled upwind to them and set our zone. We got the turn and just had to score the upwinder to tie it up. We got it to the goal line, but couldn't punch it in. We turned it, they hucked it, game over. This game really showed our need to be more patient. We had the disc on the goal line at least 3 times going upwind, but turned it over each time. If we can clean up our red zone offense, we'll be taking down better teams at Choptank and sectionals. Phoenix ended up losing in the finals to GOAT.

Day Two 5th-6th/7th-8th Game: Joystik (15-4 Loss)
We tried to get everyone involved in this game, but I think that everyone was a little down after such a tough loss in the last game. We traded points to 3-3, but lost the half 8-3. We lost the game 15-4.

  • Choptank 2002

RUN had 17 people this weekend: Andy Norman, Ben Banyas, Brody, Chuck Staresinic, Dan Leszkiewicz, Dane O'Brien, Darren Shultz, Jason Short, Jeff Nichols, Jeremy Richardson, Mark Yandrik, Matthew Bourland, and Tony Adams. Player Stats.

We went 1-5 for the tournament with tough losses each day. No team blew us out and we ended up losing every game 13-9 or 15-10. Our one win game against Cuyahoga Sheet Metal in the last game of the tournament.

    Saturday Pool Play (0-3):
  • Stunt Cocks (Richmond, VA) 13 - RUN 9

  • Club Sectionals
    RUN
    September 14-15, 2002
    Lehigh, PA
    6th Place of 22 Teams

RUN had 18 players for sectionals: Andy Norman, Anthony Adams, Ben Banyas, Brody, Craig Wilkins, Dan Kulp, Dan Leszkiewicz, Dane O'Brien, Darren Shultz, Dave LaRose, Jeff Nichols, Jeremy Richardson, Kevin Peterson, Matt Bourland, Phil Katz, Sam Bellin, Viktor Miladinov, and Yan Karklin. Player Stats.

RUN, pre-seeded 7th, went 3-1 on Saturday with comeback victories against Lehigh, Drew, and NJ masters. Our only loss came from Rage the top seed in our pool. On Sunday, we were fighting it out for 5th place. We played Princeton first and beat them 13-5. Then we played Void and pulled a squeaker out 12-11. Our final game was against a masters team called Old Sag. It was tied at 7-7, but they won 13-11. We should have played PSU (who beat Penn) for 6th/7th place, but we opted to flip discs for the game. We won the flip so we got 6th, which ended up being 5th because Old Sag moved up to the Masters division where they would eventually become the 2002 Masters National Champions.

    Saturday Pool Play (4-1):
  • RUN 14 - NJ Masters (New Jersey) 12 recap
  • RUN 13 - Lehigh University (Lehigh, PA) 9 recap
  • RAGE (Philadelphia, PA) 13 - RUN 6 recap
  • RUN 13 - Drew University (Madison, NJ) 7 recap
  • RUN 13 - University of Delaware (Newark, DE) 4 recap
    Sunday B-Bracket Elimination (3-1):
  • Quarterfinals: RUN 13 - Princeton U. (Princeton, NJ) 5 recap
  • Semis: RUN 11 - U. Of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) 10 recap
  • Finals: OLD SAG 11 (Philadelphia, PA) 11 - RUN 8 recap
  • 6th/7th: RUN 1 flip - Penn State U. (State College, PA) 0 flips recap

Day One Game 1: NJ Masters (14-12 Win)
We came out a bit sluggish on this one and let them go up early. They weren't playing really hot overall, but they were making great catches as their players hauled down swill after swill for completions and scores. I think we were down 7-5 at half, but in the second half we got our defense together and we started to catch up and pull ahead. I think we started to tire them out and managed to pull the comeback out. The only highlight I can think of is Craig Wilkins toeing the line to stay inbounds off a swilly huck that started on one side and fell all the way to the other.

Day One Game 2: Lehigh University (13-9 Win)
In this game, we had to manage another came back after losing the first half. It was an upwind/downwind game and we let them score and upwinder the very first point of the game. From that point on, we were playing catch up. In the secold half, we scored 2-3 upwinders of our own and put them away. Darren Shultz got a Callahan in this game when we had a zone on and they tried a high swing. Our tall man went in and pulled it down. Great job, Darren!

Day One Game 3: RAGE (13-6 Loss)
This is one of the games we came to play. If we want to be the best in Pennsylvania, we'll need to go through RAGE. The first half we came out really intense and hung right with RAGE. It was another upwind/downwind game, but we were both getting the upwinders. At 6-4, Jeremy Richardson put up a huck to superman (sometimes called Dane O'Brien) who made a great layout bid in the endzone, but missed it by inches. Rage converted and took half 7-4. We scored our first one out of half and then lost our intensity. I don't think Rage played that much better, we just lost it. We let them go on a 5-0 run. Final 13-6.

Day One Game 4: Drew University (13-3 Win)
This game we came out with absolutely NO intensity. It might have been because of the loss to Rage or it might have been the fact they were the lowest seeded team in our pool. Either way, they went up 4-0 on us pretty quickly. They were really aggressive and athletic and just didn't give up on any disc. Finally, we got our act together and put a point on the board to make it 4-1. About that time, their girl cheerleaders left and we started to play better and better. I think the loss of their cheerleaders might have made their men lose their game because once we started scoring we didn't stop.

Day One Game 5: University of Delaware (13-4 Win)
Last year, this was one of our toughest game and this year it looked to be the same. They were seeded one under us and had a lot of familiar faces. However, we came out strong and maintained the entire game. They never really challenged us. We ended 4-1 for the day which would put us in the B-bracket competing for 5-12th place in an 8 team double elimination tournament.

Day Two B-Bracket Quarterfinals: Princeton University (13-5 Win)
The first game of the day is always a worrisome one because no matter who you play, upsets can happen because you tend to not be warmed up. Due to a communication snafu, we arrived 30 minutes before game time, so that was just a little more to worry about. However, those fears were quickly laid to rest. We came out hard and fast and went up 4-0. We mixed up man and zone D and just kept getting the disc back. A couple superb plays in this game: Matt Bourland layed out for a D and not only got the D, but actually caught the disc. Dave LaRose also had a hot layout bid where he went completely horizontal for the disc.

Day Two B-Bracket Semifinals: University of Pennsylvania (11-10 Win)
UPenn Void and RUN competed in a grueling game to go to the game to go with Void sporting a 10-7 lead when the +1 cap was reached. Void had relied on a great deep game headed up by Logan, one of their main handlers and some monster in the endzone. However, now it was a game to 11. Run mounted a fantastic comeback with 2 discs barely reeled in as Void players layed out for D blocks on long-armed high 'ape factor' RUN players. At 10-10 with a Void player trapped on the line, Dan Leszkiewicz did an excellent job covering the dump so that when the dump was thrown he knocked it out of the air for the D. RUN just had to work it 30 yards upfield. About 5 yards outside on the goalline, Matt Bourland fell to an injury and offensive specialist Andy Norman came in for him. A few dumps and swings later, Andy Norman had the disc and hit Ben Banyas, who made a huge leaping grab, in the endzone. Game over, 11-10.

    Day Two B-Bracket Finals: O.L.D. S.A.G. (11-8 Loss)
After a brief intermission for moving to new fields at the top of Lehigh's campus, the game for 5th place and the rain started. The first half was filled with zone and at times it appeared the weather was against us. Twice OLD SAG started out on defense and through a zone. We worked it all the way up the field over a 10-15 minute period, but turned it over near the goal line. Then the rain would stop and OLD SAG would march it right back the other way with minimal weather trouble. Tied at 6s, OLD SAG took half 7-6. After the half, OLD SAG sported some new defenses and some baffling offenses that we didn't recognize in time, including a german and at least one multi-dump upfield weave that created a lot of room for the cutters. This gave OLD SAG the advantage they needed and a 10-7 lead when the +1 cap went on. We exchanged points and ended the game, 11-8 OLD SAG.

Day Two B-Bracket Finals: Penn State University(1-0 Win)
This game has 2 MVPs. Number one, Andy Norman, the man, the myth, the mediator. Before we would play our next game, we had a bye to see if we would play Penn State or Penn. However, the team voted not to wait if possible. Andy talked to Penn and used his mental prowess to get them to concede the game to us, if they beat PSU. Then Andy talked to PSU. They agreed to the same, if we could win a flip of two discs. This is where our second MVP comes in, Kevin Peterson. Can this guy call discs or what? He called it, we won, game over. RUN goes home 6th overall but with the 5th seed in our section to regionals because Old Sag is going to play masters.

  • Skylander II
    September 27-28, 2002
    Edinboro, PA
    1st Place of 14 Teams

RUN had 15 players for Skylander: Brody, Charles Chapman, Chuck Staresinic, Dan Kulp, Dan Leszkiewicz, Dane O'Brien,Dave Putz, Jay Paulonis, Jason Short, Mark Yandrick, Mike Kutscher, Phil Katz, Randy Augustine, Sean McComb, and Viktor Miladinov. Player Stats.

Saturday we had a combined score of 60-11. The best thing about those games was it gave us lots of opportunity to set the offensive tone - patient, lots of dumps and swings, and high percentage throws. Perhaps one drawback of falling into that rhythm was that on Sunday, when we played much tougher teams, we were so dump-and-swing happy that we sometimes clogged all around the disk and worked too hard for 10-yard passes.

On Sunday, we began a long haul to the championship, but we did it indramatic fashion, with three come-from-behind victories on Sunday: 15-13 over Kent State (an awful game for us to finish pool play, but we pulled it out), 17-15 semi-final over Edinboro (including 2 game points for them) and 13-11 final over Penn State Combo. All of these teams played really well and we played well against them (13 turnovers against Edinboro and 11 against PSU), but our main problem was stopping them from scoring.

Congratulations to all the players of RUN this weekend for getting their first tournament victory as a team and a special congratulations to Jason Short for winning the tournament's Dane O'Brien Award. (Seriously, that's what they call it. An MVP-type award. Dane didn't play well enough to win it and didn't earn it just because it was his birthday.)

    Pool Play (5-0):

  • RUN 15 - Allegheny U. Barking Spiders (Meadville, PA) 4
  • RUN 15 - PB&J (Pittsburgh, PA) 2
  • RUN 15 - Geneseo U. (New York) 2
  • RUN 15 - Carnegie Mellon U. Mr. Yuk (Pittsburgh, PA ) 3
