  • 5th-6th/7th-8th Game: RUN 1 - GOAT 0 recap

Day One Game 1: Ring of Fire (13-8 Loss)
    More to come.

Day One Game 2: Madcow (15-7 Win)
    More to come.

Day One Game 3: Chatanooga (15-12 Win)
    More to come.

Day One Crossover Game: Doublewide (15-10 Win)
This was a big win for RUN because Doublewide was a nationals quarterfinalist last year.

Day Two Prequarterfinals: Swift (15-7 Win)
Our first game was against a team called "Swift" which had some guys from Helmar. The first half was an upwind/downwind battle. Swift had ok throws, but were impotent in the wind. However our strategy of punt and play d was very effective. We generally put on a trapping cup, forcing them to the forehand side. Swift worked it up to our goal line once, but turned it over before scoring. Shortly before half, we broke their zone up the backhand side and then quickly moved up to their goal line. After a few swings we had the winning up-winder. We took half 8-5. In the second half we effectively solved their zone (or at least didn't give them to set their zone so they had to go man), scoring 3 more upwind goals and taking the half 7-2 and a 15-7 final score.

Day Two Quarterfinals: Electrig Pig (12-9 Loss)
Our second game was against Electric Pig, officially called Wooden Teeth at the tournament. The wind was still the major factor in the game. We scored an early up-wind goal. E-Pig answered back with an up-winder of their own. We took half 8-7. Unfortunately, early in the second half, E Pig. got a fast break on a transition, where we hadn't fully set our zone, and they worked it up to about 10 yards out of our end zone. The wind steadily lessened during the play, until it was almost completely still. We made them swing it 10+ times, but they were finally able to score. We weren't able to duplicate the up-winder, while they took another from us, and we lost at the cap by 3 or 4.

Day Two 5th-6th/7th-8th Game: GOAT (1-0 Win by forfeit)
GOAT was knocked out of the regular bracket by Chain (I think) and had a 20-hour drive home that they wanted to get started instead of playing another game.

Day Two 5th/6th Game: Pike (1-0 Win by forfeit)
We waited for a couple hours while Pike played Big Ass Truck in a very close game. Afterwards, Pike didn't want to play.

  • Beth Coltman
    Memorial Tournament

This weekend we had 13 players:
Brandon Welch, Dane O'Brien, Dave Lionetti, Dave Offner, Dave Putz, Herschel Tubbs, Jason Short, Matthew Bourland, Maxence Crossley, Mike Droske, Randy Augustine, Tom Pribicko, and Tommy Hendrickson.

    Saturday Pool Play (1-2):
  • RUN 13 - East River Yacht Club (New York, NY) 7
  • New York - RUN
  • Pike - RUN
    Saturday Crossover game (1-0):
  • RUN - I.C.U. (Pittsburgh, PA)
    Sunday Elimination (3-1):
  • Twisted Metal (Boston) - RUN
  • RUN 15 - East River Yacht Club (New York, NY) 4
  • Rage (Philadelphia, PA) 11 - RUN 9

  • Mother's Day
    May 1-2, 2004
    Freehold, NJ
    6th place of 7 teams

This weekend we had 14 players:
Andrew Willment, Ben Ristau, Brandon Welch, Brent Bellinger, Brian Litman, Brody, Dave Lionetti, Dave Vatz, Dylan Sawyer,
Jon Harden, Josh Suskin, Mike Droske, Mike LoPresti, Reed Verdesoto, Sean McComb (sideline help only) and Tommy Hendrickson.

On the whole, this squad played well for being such a young/inexperienced group at a competetive tournament. There was really high competition and playing against those players really benefited every player who chose to rise to the challenge on the field.
    Round Robin Play (1-6):
  • Pike 13 (New Jersey) - RUN 8 recap
  • Rage 13 (Philadelphia, PA) - RUN 8 recap
  • Boston, MA 13- RUN 1 recap
  • New York 13 - RUN 12 recap
  • Electric Pig (Washington DC) 13 - RUN 9 recap
  • RUN 12 - East River Yacht Club (New York, NY) 11 recap
  • Brooklyn Knights (New York, NY) - RUN 9 recap

Day One Game 1: Pike (13-8 Loss)
Some of our cleanest offense of the weekend, but we just couldn't get it together.

Day One Game 2: Rage (13-8 Loss)
    More to come.

Day One Game 3: Boston (13-1 Loss)
It was pretty cool to see the guys from Boston play (DoG is no more, so DoG and Boss Hogg have combined), I think there is a lot we can take from competing against them and learning from the way the run and play.

Day One Game 4: New York (13-12 Loss)
    More to come.

Day Two Game 1: Electric Pig (13-9 Loss)
    More to come.

Day Two Game 2: East River Yacht Club (12-11 Win)
    More to come.

Day Two Game 3: Brooklyn Knights (13-9 Loss)
Some of our cleanest offense of the weekend, but we just couldn't get it together.

  • 5th Annual No Surf
    RUN
    June 19-20, 2004
    Cleveland, OH
Tied for 3rd place of 22 Teams

We played at the tournament with 16 players:
Ben Ristau, Brandon Redding, Brandon Welch, Dane O'Brien, Darren Shultz (Sunday only), Dave Danks, Dave 'Weasel' Lionetti, Dave 'Deo' Offner, Dylan Sawyer-Villers (Saturday only), Herschel Tubbs, Jeremy Richardson, Kevin Peterson (?), Maxence Crossley, Mike Droske, Sam Stein, and Tom Pribicko.

Our two losses came against the two finalists - however we collapsed kind of badly in both second halves after scrapping with them early on.

    Saturday Pool Play (3-1):
  • RUN 13 - Madcow (Columbus, OH) 10 recap
  • RUN 13 - Zebra Muscles (Rochester, NY) 8 recap
  • Steelhead (Michigan ie. BAT) 13 - RUN 5 recap
  • RUN 13 - ROY (Toronto, ON) 3 recap
    Sunday Elimination (3-0):
  • A-Bracket Quarterfinals: RUN 13 - Nemo (Ann Arbor, MI) 10 recap
  • A-Bracket Semifinals: G-Unit (Madison, WI) 15 - RUN 7 recap
  • 3rd/4th Game: RUN 0 - Madcow (Columbus, OH) 0 recap

Day One Game 1: Madcow (13-10 Win)
As always, Madcow was solid, but not great. We went out expecting to win and just took care of business. On offense we scored efficiently and on defense we got the breaks we needed to win the games.

Day One Game 2: Zebra Muscles (13-8 Win)
A few years ago Zebra Muscles beat us, but since then we have continued to get better and better. They are solid, but not great. We went out expecting to win and just took care of business. On offense we scored efficiently and on defense we got the breaks we needed to win the games.

Day One Game 3: Steelhead (13-5 Loss)
Steelhead was a better team than us, but we were able to stay with them for quite a while. The key point in this game was 6-4 them with us on offense. This was the mother of all ugly points and must have lasted at least ten minutes. It seemed like Steelhead would march it up the field, only to make a turn near the goal line. We would usually throw it deep after one or two passes and these were mostly bad looks. Steelhead eventually did get the break for half, and we were just mental and physically destroyed after this, scoring only one point in the second half.

Day One Game 4: ROY (13-3 Win)
This is a 2nd or 3rd tier team out of Toronto. We didn't have any trouble with them.

Day Two A-Bracket Quarterfinals: Nemo (13-10 Win)
There was a steady breeze and this turned out to be a mostly upwind/downwind game against a solid team that wouldn't give up the disc. We mostly traded points in the first half. We did get a break on defense, but gave it back and were up 1 at half. They could not contain our offensive cutters who basically got open at will. On defense, though, we had to earn every turn we got. Sam Stein had a great layout d, and we got two breaks in the second half, including one to end the game.

    Day Two A-Bracket Semifinals: G-Unit (15-7 Loss)
Madison is a very aggressive and athletic team. We went up 2-1 and then they brought up their level of intensity. They made it hard to move the disc by putting on extra aggressive marks and really tightening their coverage, especially on the dumps. They went up 5 to 2. Then, we changed from spread to stack and started matching intensity, mostly with our own defense, and got a goal back, but we were still down 6-4. This was a key point and we had a chance to score, but like the game against Steelhead, they scored this and the next one to reach half at 8-4.

Day Two 3rd/4th Place Game: Madcow (0-0)
We decided not to rematch Madcow for 3rd place because they were drinking and we only had 12 or 13 guys.

  • 5th Annual No Surf
    BRUNT
    June 19-20, 2004
    Cleveland, OH
    13th place of 22 Teams

We played at the tournament with 14 players:
Alan Abel, Aseem Good, Ben Lawson, Chris Brenenborg, Dan Kulp, Dave Vatz, Eric Siegmund, Evan Jenkins, Jason 'Figgy' Figura, Matthew Bourland, Mike LoPresti, Randy Augustine (Sunday only), Ryan Conboy, and Ted Olds.

This has been the deepest B-squad RUN has put together yet. We had alot of good players and good handlers. The weekend had spots of great O & D and individual great plays but we never seemed to lean entirely on a single all-star for a whole game.

    Saturday Pool Play (3-1):
  • BRUNT 13 - Squirrel Nuts (Rochester, NY) ?5? recap
  • Skeet Shooters (Bloomington, IN) 13 - BRUNT 11 recap
  • BRUNT 13 - Eggs are Good (Buffalo, NY) 2 recap
  • BRUNT 13 - NEO Juniors (Cleveland, OH) 3 recap
    Sunday Elimination (1-1):
  • B-Bracket Quarterfinals: BRUNT 13 - 2-Bit Ultimate (Johnstown, PA) 6 recap
  • B-Bracket Semifinals: BRUNT 13 - North Coast (Cleveland, OH) ?5? recap
  • B-Bracket Finals: BRUNT 13 - Joyce (Columbus, OH) 11 recap

Day One Game 1: Squirrel Nuts (13-5 Win)
We came out ready and the game was never that close. We played fairly consistent and scored at will to come out on top and avenge a two-point loss in pool play at last year's No Surf.

Day One Game 2: Skeet Shooters (13-11 Loss)
The only real challenge of the day. They leaned heavily on two all-stars while we were playing as a team. It was a game that could have gone either way. The loose spread D worked very well, forcing 3-4 turnovers until they adjusted for it.

Day One Game 3: Eggs are Good (13-2 Win)
We think these were a bunch of soccer players trying ultimate, but we aren't sure. They were definitely some athletes new to the game and we took them to school.

Day One Game 4: NEO Juniors (13-3 Win)
    More schooling for the youngins.

Day Two B-Bracket Quarterfinals: 2-Bit Ultimate (13-6 Win)
We traded the first four points. Then we kept being consistent and marched on.

Day Two B-Bracket Semifinals: North Coast (13-?5? Win)
We traded the first 3 points. Then we kept up pressure and moved on.

Day Two B-Bracket Finals: Joyce (13-11 Win)
We traded points the whole game. They effectively stopped our spread; so we stuck with a stack offense and just beat them with classic hard cutting and hard D.

  • Boston Invitational
    Devens, MA
    June 26-27, 2004
5th of 14 teams in Easterns Open Division

We played at the tournament with 15 players:
Ben Ristau, Dane O'Brien, Darren Shultz, Dave 'Weasel' Lionetti, Dave 'Deo' Offner, Dave Vatz, Drew Hendrickson, Jeremy Richardson, Jon Harden, Kevin Peterson, Maxence Crossley, Mike Droske, Rich 'Fraggle' Coker, Sam Stein, Ted Olds.

There were two divisions at the Boston Invitational. A 16-team elite bracket and a 14-team Easterns divistion. We went 5-2 overall, finishing 5th in the Easterns division. Tthis was a good learning experience for a lot of us, in terms of playing and being assertive in roles we haven't played in before or with people we're still learning to play with. We had our share of growing pains, and hopefully that will pay off later in the season.

    Saturday Pool Play (3-1):
  • RUN 13 - Wormtown (Worcester, MA) 8 recap
  • RUN 13 - Red Tide (Portland, ME) 3 recap
  • Q (Quebec) 13 - RUN 8 recap
  • RUN 11 - Brooklyn Ultimate (New York, NY) 10 recap
    Sunday Elimination (2-1):
  • Easterns Quarterfinals: Grand Truck (Toronto, ON) 12 - RUN 9 recap
  • 5th-6th/7th-8th Game: RUN 13 - Dallas Ultimate (Dallas, TX) 12 recap
  • 5th/6th Place Game: RUN 7 - Jackhammer (Boston, MA) 5 recap

Day One Game 1: Wormtown (13-10 Win)
An ugly game in bad conditions.

Day One Game 2: Red Tide (13-3 Win)
We played very nicely this game.

Day One Game 3: Quebec (13-8 Loss)
This was a very disappointing game. They just played with more aggression that us and we played indifferently.

Day One Game 4: Brooklyn Ultimate (11-10 Win)
We got behind early in a poorly played first half, but then got it together and played well again in the 2nd half.

Day Two Quarterfinals: Grand Truck (12-9 Loss)
This was a pretty close game. Both teams struggled with the wind.

Day Two 5th-6th/7th-8th Game: Dallas Ultimate (13-12 Win)
A nice comeback win for us. Great effort in spite of our low numbers and injuries. They broke first and continued to start strong to go up 6-3. They took half 7-5. We then went on a run to start the second half to go up 11-7. They scored the next four to tie it at 11 with the hard cap at 13. We traded the next two points, so we scored the final point to win 13-12.

The four points they scored against us towards the end of the game were pretty much because our zone offense struggled - like it did against Q on the first day. It was pretty windy and they put some pretty good height (players from Hang Time) in the cup making it tough. The last two points we scored against their zone were very calm and methodical points for our zone offense. Overall it was a very fun game and great to win.
That was our second double game point win of the weekend.

Day Two 5th/6th Game: Jackhammer (7-5 Win)
    More to come.

  • Motown Throwdown
    RUN
    July 31-August 1, 2004
    Hartland, MI
Tied for 9th out of 24 teams

We played at the tournament with 13 players:
Andrew Willment, Ben Ristau, Brandon 'Pre' Redding, Brandon Welch, Darren Shultz, Dave 'Weasel' Lionetti, Dave 'Deo' Offner, Dave Vatz, Jeremy Richardson, Kevin Peterson, Matthew Bourland, Maxence Crossley, and Mike Droske.

Overall this tournament was a mixed bag. We weren't able to beat any of the top teams, and we made a lot more execution mistakes that we are used to. Part of this may have been from taking a July layoff and being a little rusty. If that is the excuse, it ends now. Some positives from this weekend were that our offense's contiuation cutting was better and rarely stagnated, our play calls worked well, individuals gained experience in new or expanded roles, we got more chemistry, and we played hard through our difficulties. Some things that we need to work on are our marks (moving our feet), our Zone D (communication and harder running), and stopping the up-the-line dmp cut. If you need a little humour remember mikeD and a bedsheet . . .

    Saturday Pool Play (0-4):
  • La Cosa Nostra (High Point, NC) 13 - RUN 9 recap
  • Machine (Chicago, IL) 13 - RUN 4 recap
  • G-Unit (Madison, WI) 13 - RUN 7 recap
  • Tanasi (Tennessee) 13 - RUN 7 recap
    Sunday Elimination 12-1):
  • Prequarterfinals: Subzero (Minneapolis, MN) 13 - RUN 3 recap
  • Another Game: RUN 13 - Nemo (Ann Arbor, MI) 9 recap

Day One Game 1: La Cosa Nostra (13-9 Loss)
    More to come.

Day One Game 2: Machine (13-4 Loss)
This game was a blowout and will not be spoken of again.

    Day One Game 3: G-Unit (13-7 Loss)
    More to come.

Day One Game 4: Tanasi (13-7 Loss)
    More to come.

Day Two Prequaterfinals: Subzero (13-3 Loss)
    This was an ugly loss.

Day Two Another Game: Nemo (13-9 Wins)
    We beat Nemo pretty handily.

  • RUB 2004
    BRUNT
    July 31-August 1, 2004
    Rochester, NY
    7th out of 18 teams

BRUNT played at the tournament with 12 players:
Ben Lawson, Chris Brenenborg, Eric Siegmund, Jeff Nichols, Jesse Evans, Jon Taft, Jon Harden, Josh Suskin, Mike LoPresti, Randy Augustine, Sean McComb and Steve Grassel.

After playing hard Saturday, we ended up seeded second in our pool because Buffalo ended up beating Zebra Muscles. Then for some reason we ended up seeded 5th overall going into Sunday. This had something to do with Mad Ass not score reporting. On Sunday we played well enough to place 7th and break our original seed of 9th place. Since this was the first time BRUNT played together as a group, we played pretty well. Thought we didn't fare too well against the better teams, we got some experience playing against that level of competition. The juniors especially distinguished themselves because our team was about half highschool players.

This weekend we worked on a few of our different defensives to get the kinks worked out. At times we would not pick up our men, at other times we would dominate. Individually we need to work on some of our basics like not getting beat deep or to the force side. On offense, we forced a coupel teams to switch back to man because we abused their zones. However, our man offense needs to be cleaner - only one cut at a time. Our endzone offense could also use some work.

Special thanks to Josh Suskin, who was voted MVP for the weekend for his great defense and popping. He also brough Sean McComb up from Philly. Thanks to Randy Augustine for organizing the hotel rooms. He also deserves a huge thanks from the older folks on the team for sleeping in the same room with the juniors and supervising. Finally, thanks to Ben Lawson for driving.

    Saturday Pool Play (2-2):
  • Zebra Muscles (Rochester, NY) 13 - RUN 12 recap
  • RUN 13 - 2-Bit Ultimate (Johnstown, PA) 4 recap
  • RUN 13 - Buffalo ?6? recap
  • Mad Ass (Philadelphia, PA) 13 - BRUNT 4 recap
    Sunday Elimination 12-1):
  • Prequarterfinals: BRUNT 13 - Albany Masters 10 (Albany, NY) recap
  • Quarterfinals: Mad Ass 13 (Philadelphia, PA) - BRUNT 4 recap
  • 7th/8th Place Game: Jackhammer (Boston, MA) 13 - BRUNT 8 recap

Day One Game 1: Zebra Muscles (13-12 Loss)
A disappointing loss because we were up a break all game until the end and then several times turned the disc over on the verge of getting another upwind goal.

Day One Game 2: 2-Bit Ultimate (13-4 Win)
This is a young team that just doesn't challenge us at all yet.

Day One Game 3: Buffalo (13-6 Win)
We played intense through most of this game. It was probably our best all around game of the weekend.

Day One Game 4: Mad Ass (13-4 Loss)
Against this combination Rage, Old Sag, Donkey Bomb team, we had our moments, but just turned the disc over too often and couldn't get it back on defense.

Day Two Prequarterfinals: Albany Masters (13-10 Win)
We started well and took half 7-3 or 7-4. Then we let them get back in a little, but we were able to finally pull it out in the end.

Day Two Quarterfinals: Mad Ass (13-4 Loss)
We started well and took advantage of some of their early mistakes. At half, we were only down 3 points, 7-4. Then we started forcing this and just couldn't punch any more goals in.

Day Two 7th/8th Place Game: Jackhammer (13-8 Loss)
We had a hard time defending these guys. We mostly could not handle their deep game. On offense, we kept forcing some throws and turning the disc over.
